The City of Houston recently purchased and installed several ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations and has nearly 50 EV’s and PHEV’s in service today. The installation of the ChargePoint charging stations in Galveston will serve to promote inter-city travel by Houston businesses and residents who own and drive plug-in vehicles and who travel to Galveston. “The ChargePoint Networked Charging Station is an aesthetically pleasing and effective method of encouraging a practical, viable, renewable and sustainable resources program within our city,” said Matthew Pelz, Galveston Historical Foundation special projects coordinator. “The ChargePoint charging stations allow for the use of an emerging clean fuel technology that can be easily integrated in the Historic Downtown District. We are in the process of rebuilding our community since Hurricane Ike swept through. We are embracing sustainable transportation and renewable energy solutions and these charging stations are a welcome addition.” The networked charging station is part of the ChargePoint Network® which is open to all drivers of plug-in vehicles and provides authentication, management, and real-time control for the networked electric vehicle charging stations through multiple web-based portals for Hosts, Fleet Managers, Drivers, and Utilities. ChargePoint Network unique features include: The network of electric vehicle charging stations is accessible to all plug-in drivers by making a toll free call to the 24/7 number on each charging station, or signing up for a ChargePoint Network monthly access plan and obtaining a ChargePass™ smart card. Other future payment options include using any smart (RFID) credit/debit card to authorize a. To locate available charging stations, visit www.mychargepoint.net and click “Find Stations”. “The ChargePoint Network provides Texas with proven technology that is available for consumers throughout the Houston area,” said Richard Lowenthal, CEO Coulomb Technologies. “The Galveston network of stations combined with the existing Houston network gives Southern Texas one of the largest installations of networked charging stations in the U.S. The demographic considerations for Galveston are near-perfect; the number of people who live and work on the Island, the close proximity to the Houston Metro area, an international tourism base with a mind-set that is supportive of recreational EV use.” Many neighborhood and low-speed electric vehicles are already in use on Galveston Island and more are on the way. The City of Galveston recently placed two new e-buses into service, and an electric taxi company, along with a shuttle service using 12-passenger EV’s, are soon to be in operation. Electric bicycles, scooters and motorcycle rentals are soon to be available and will compliment a sustainable transportation initiative that has been well received by the public. The plans and projects underway are designed to make Galveston Island a national leader in clean-fuel sustainable transportation and renewable energy development programs. Past Press Releases - 2009 PRESS RELEASE – Houston, Texas – October 23, 2009 Positive Energy Resources, a Houston area Renewable & Sustainable Resource Systems company, announced today that they have signed a sales and installation agreement with Verdek, of Rome, GA To be called the Houston EV Charge Network©, the grid will consist of multiple charging stations to be deployed at popular or highly-frequented locales and will include Galveston, The Woodlands, Cypress, Katy and Clear Lake, with additional network areas to be developed according to consumer demand. One or more charging stations can be sited at each location. Remote off-grid charge sites are possible by integrating the use of wind turbines and solar panels. Nan McReynolds, spokesman for Positive Energy Resources said "There are some great EV’s and hybrids on the market today, with more on the way in the next few months. Some of the new EV models will really catch the public’s attention, and experts are predicting that EV sales will increase exponentially over the next two to three years. New battery technologies will provide for extended travel range which has been the downfall to past EV initiatives. We believe that if we are to meet our goals of being less dependent on foreign oil and to more effectively utilize renewable resources for transportation, charging stations like ChargePoint™ will be commonplace soon. It is our plan to provide prospective EV buyers some peace of mind in knowing that there will be easy to find, low-cost charging solutions available all across the metropolitan Houston area in hopes of helping spur EV sales locally.” Ms. McReynolds went on to say that schools, businesses, apartments communities, high-rise office buildings and lofts, shopping malls, movie theaters and restaurants are all prospective target locations and that “we hope to begin installing units very soon. We are currently working with a local college on the first of two test sites and we look forward to showing the public how easy ChargePoint™ is to use, further promoting the sales and use of eco-friendly and efficient vehicles in Houston.” Guy Mannino is the former president of Pirelli Tires USA and is the President & CEO, Verdek, the South Central Region Distributor of Coulomb ChargePoint™ Systems, and in welcoming Positive Energy to the Verdek family, he agreed with McReynolds and said that although there are few electric vehicles on the road today, it is a matter of time before they are common place. “It is important that we get traction in this emerging market now in order to gain and maintain the momentum necessary to lead the building of the electric infrastructure for the EV market. We are able to provide EV owners with a proven charging solution at work or school and at many of the places they might normally frequent and park their vehicles for some time” said Mannino. Mannino is a big believer in the electric car movement - Verdek EV also is the distributor for the Tazzari Zero and ZAP Alias lines of EV’s, two of the more unique and interesting EV’s in this growing segment of the auto market. Coulomb ChargePoints™ are in use all across the USA and in Europe and have been sited at McDonald’s and Starbucks, as well as placed into use by municipalities across the USA. Both San Jose, CA and San Francisco, CA have ChargePoint™ networks in place. EV owners are able to easily access charging station locations and other useful site information on the internet and can even monitor their own vehicle power consumption data by logging into www.mychargepoint.net. Positive Energy Resources, in addition to sales and installation of ChargePoint™, is a Certified Mariah Power Windspire™ Wind Turbine dealer and is the parent company of Green Power Garages™, an affiliated company that sells and installs the Solara line of solar & wind-powered carports and garages, available in both on and off-grid applications. We are pround to be associated with Verdek. See our ChargePoint section in this site!
